Day 3 on the road – May 20, 2023
We got to see lots of beautiful country as we were driving through KS. We’ve stopped for the night at another Walmart in Hay’s, KS. Got parked and ate a quick dinner. We want to try to get back on the road about 8am tomorrow so that we can make through Denver, CO and stay the night at a campground near the Rocky Mountain National Park. Trip is about 6 hours from here and we’ll stay a couple of days and do some exploring of the area before we move on. We’ll be driving through Westminster, CO so @Kelly Barth I’ll be waving to you on our way through! 😊
Saw a couple of different very large wind farms as we were traveling. I’ve seen them before but always amazes me how those can produce the amount of power that they do just because of their sheer size.
Today was awesome as we got to see things that I haven’t seen before. We all know that Ohio is famous for their dead possums on the side of the road and there are many jokes about them. Today going through Missouri and Kansas it was dead armadillos on the side of the road. Never really thought about the fact that there were armadillos in this part of the country. I kept hoping that we’d see a live one walking along side of the road, but that wasn’t meant to be I guess.
Lots of farm lands with cows and horses and a small farm with what appeared to be all donkeys and lots of them. And just lots of land – sparse housing and far in between. Was beautiful though.
We also drove past Levenworth. I’ve seen movies where the penitentiary is mentioned, etc. but really did not know much about it. Though located on federal land, it is a medium security prison with a satellite federal prison camp nearby for minimum security male offenders. The historical aspect of the facility is really intriguing as it is often confused as a military prison. In actuality, this Levenworth is a civilan prison while the Levenworth United States Disciplinary Barracks is the military correctional facility which is located on the Army post of Fort Levenworth in Kansas and is a maximum security prison.
